Hofstra University is a private, nonsectarian institution of higher learning located in the Village of Hempstead, which is a village, located in the town of Hempstead, in Nassau County, in the US state of New York, sometimes referred to as Homestead Village, in order to distinguish it from the town of Hempstead, having a population estimated at a number of more than 56 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Hofstra University was founded as an extension of NYU, on the estate of a recently deceased wealthy couple, Dutch immigrant lumber magnate William S. Hofstra (1861–1932) and his second wife, Kate Mason (1854–1933), gaining independence in 1935, as Hofstra College, and gaining university status in 1963.
Today, the university offers its students educational programs in 19 full accredited academic areas, fewer than 100 colleges and universities matching this achievement, nationally, provided through various centers and institutes, which include: Center for Children, Families and the Law, Center for Educational Access and Success (CEAS), Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy (CSLD), Institute of the Arts, Hofstra University Cultural Center (HUCC) and School of Communications.
Its athletic teams are known as `The Pride`, since 2004, being formerly known as the Flying Dutchmen, who compete in the NCAA, in 17 varsity men’s and women’s sports, including football, softball, wrestling and baseball. The Pride nickname was chosen from the Hofstra Pride on-and off-campus image campaign that began in 1987, during the university’s dramatic recovery and growth, which was followed by a financial crisis, in the 1970s that forced the layoff of more than 100 employees.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Chris Albrecht - former chairman of HBO, Avi Arad – Founder and CEO of Marvel Studios, Producer of the Spider-man and X-Men films, Maryanne Trump Barry - U.S. Court of Appeals Judge, James Caan - actor, Joe Morton - award winning actor; appeared in Terminator 2, American Gangster etc., Dr. Donna Mendes - Senior Vascular Surgeon, the First African American Woman Vascular Surgeon certified by the American Board of Surgery, and Randy W.
